Supination / Underpronation and Cleats

The opposite of overpronation, supination (also called underpronation) is a biomechanical condition where the foot causes strain or injury to the ankle and foot/leg tendons or muscles because of excessive turning in of the foot from the ankle, causing an outward rolling of the leg over the ankle.

The condition causes one to walk on the outward edge of the foot, leading to unnantural strain on other bones, tendons and joints in the foot, ankle, shin and knee.

If the condition is treated in chilren under the age of five it is often correctable with the use of orthotic insoles.

Causes are usually genetic.

Looking at a foot from behind, as if it were a clock, the tedon strecthing from the heel to the lower calf should read "on the hours", whereas a supinated foot appear to show "five minutes after" on the right foot, and "five till", on the left.
