Phylon and Phylon Midsoles
Phylon, a Nike trademark is actually another form of
EVA.
The difference from traditional EVA being that Phylon is derived from extreme compression. That is, EVA pellets are vacuum compressed, heated, and then cooled in a mold shaped like the
midsole
of a shoe.
The new method purportedly offers a more responsive cushioning system while mainaining a lower profile in the midsole.
An advantage of the new compound is that it is reportedly easier to customize to the specific needs of individual athletes and their specific sports.
One of the drawbacks may be however, is that compressed EVA may not break down as much as regular EVA, thus limiting the amount of "customization" to the individual foot found in the older version.
On line chatter says that the new type (actually called
CMEVA)
of shoes crack less than older models. Also, for some reason, it is reported that they tend to keep the foot drier.
