Orthoses

Orthoses are custom shoe inserts that are prescribed and customized by a podiatrist. These inserts add to comfort - but more importantly are designed to aid in the prevention of biomechanical injuries due to such events as overpronation or supination.

Besides these injuries, custom inserts are also often used in the treatment of flat feet, low back pain, ankle pain, runners knee, plantar fasciitis (arch pain and/or heel pain), heel spurs, or neuroma.

Below we show a picture of how a flat foot looks. This is also a picture of a podiatrist at work. He is casting the foot and will make an orthotic foot insert based upon this casting!

In particular with sprained ankles, specially designed inserts are often used together with ankle wraps or splints to help speed recovery and prevent re-injury.

These inserts often come with "deep heels" to aid arch-support.

Athletes often change into sandals that use these inserts after leaving the playing and practice fields.
