PUMA's Lace Wrap System and Cleats

PUMA's Lace Wrap System has to do with being able to get a snug / tight fit of the shoe (specifically the upper) around your foot. If you don’t have that snug / tight fit, then we can start to have a lot of problems with our cleats (blisters, increased risk of a twisted ankle, lack of feel, slower speed, etc…). So we want the laces tight and we want them tight from the lowest part of the “lace wrap system” to the top of the shoe.

Throughout my life I have experienced shoes where it was almost impossible to get the upper to fit tightly around the metatarsus (area just above your toes). Therefore, by removing the “traditional – through the holes system”, many sports cleats manufacturers have replaced these holes with small loops (much smaller but similar to belt loops on your pants). And possibly through physics, these small loops allow you to pull your laces tighter and therefore get a much more snug / tight fit across the length of the shoe.

One concern that we have here… if the loops stretch, then we are not actually pulling the upper tighter over our foot, we are only stretching the loops. We will need to investigate further.

Here are some pictures showing a “traditional – through the hole lacing system” and a “newer – through the small loops system.”

Picture above is PUMA's Lace Wrap System. AND you can see that they also have the "traditional" system available on this shoe as well. We like this because it gives you the option of choosing how you would like to lace your cleats!
