Foot Leg Injuries continued
(Foot leg injuries in baseball cont.) ...Of those 26 injuries, 8 are hamstring tears or pulls most of which occurred before games, so we assume they are mostly related to poor stretching. Although, as we note elsewhere, Jose Reyes' hamstring pull and persistent leg calf and foot pain this season may all be related to his off-season switch to Under Armour cleats. (See articles below) We note with interest two players (Wakefield, Kozmanoff) who complained first of leg and calf pain and now suffer from back problems. Sympathetic injuries occurring in the back and leg muscles resulting from subconscious compensation by athletes for injuries further down the limb are common. We will do some research into those relationships. Also surprisingly, only 3 of the injuries that are foot or leg related are attributable to contusion type conditions caused by foul balls or other types of "hits". The remaining 23 are all either "wear and tear" injuries or pulls and rips. We count 5 injuries directly attributable to the ankle foot or heel, while 11 of the injuries affect the leg from the knee to foot. We will use this data to better inform our research into cleats.
