Foot Arches and Cleats
Above you can see the "footprint" of the three different foot arches. You can view your own arch by wetting your foot and then stepping on darker colored construction paper.
Understanding your arch type is very important and of course a
sports podiatrist
will have the knowledge and resources to give the best recommendations concerning your arch and what type of cleats and / or
orthoses
will be best for you and your sport. We can give a very general example that people with high arches tend to be
overpronators
and therefore might need a pair of cleats with a firm and high arch. Athletes with high arches also might perform better in cleats that have a straight
shoe last.
Both of the above will help keep the foot in a correct position during running, etc... We can also say that people with flat feet might be more likely to
underpronate.
These people will also need a firm and high arch. This will also help keep the foot in a more normal or
"neutral" pronation.
These arch types, however, might need a more flexible and curved last. The above examples are very much over-simplified, and if you are serious about injury prevention and top performance please visit a podiatrist... preferably a sports podiatrists!
