Fold Over Tongue and Cleats

The "fold over tongue" is commonly used in baseball cleats. It possibly helps protect the top of the foot.

Sometimes it can happen while a player is "at bat" that the player hits a foul ball in a downward direction and the ball impacts the top of the left foot (for right handed batters), or the top of the right foot (for left handed batters). This tongue possibly gives some protection to this "injury".

The "fold over tongue" might also possibly help prevent the shoes from becoming untied.

Please understand that it is "standard" for the Low to have a "fold over tongue". For the Mids, it is very common to NOT have a "fold over tongue", although there are many Mids that DO have a "fold over tongue". The Mids without "fold over tongues" often have extra padding within the "tongue" that protect the feet from "foul ball impact".
