TPU and Cleats
TPU stands for Thermoplastic Polyurethane. The substance is used to build
midsole
"cages" in many cleats.
Some of the benefits of TPU over rubber, other plastics, and other materials...
1) it is lighter.
2) it has more "shock absorption"
3) it has a very high "load bearing" properties (doesn't break! : )).
The material has superior durability and is also more flexible in colder weather compared to other materials. It is also waterproof. TPUs also don't buckle or tear.
Some of the major producers now use TPU for their midsoles, although
EVA
and particularly CMEVA is the most widely used material. Under Armour also uses the polyurethane for the
outsole
on many of its cleat models. Thermoplastic Polyurethane is also used to make the pads on soccer balls, a testimony to the substances durability and waterproof qualities.
