Nike Sense
Nike Sense has been incorporated for the first time in the Superfly II's, which were released in February,2010. The system is called and 'Adaptive Stud Design' because the stud plate reacts to varying pressure applied by the player, to either lengthen or retract the cleats by as much as 3mm, allowing for more or less traction as needed. The phsics involved has as much to do with the carbon fiber plate the shoe is built on (and below) as it does with the actual "retractable" cleats themselves. The flexibility of the carbon plate causes it to push down on the cleat when a player steps on soft turf, thus extending it. The carbon, converseley is strong enough to prevent the cleat from returning too far back into the foot on harder surfaces.
The design is supoosed to be particularly beneficial in the push off during a quick acceleartion.Adaptive Studs were designed in response to a study Nike did of the World Cup Final Tournament of 2006, which found 800+ incidents of slippage during the 60 something plus, game torunament.
