Best Football Cleats

Choosing the Cleats that are Best for You!

Keep these two questions in mind:

1) What position will you be playing most of the time?

2) Under what kind of field conditions will you usually be playing in and on?

By 'conditions' we mean will the turf or grass often be wet? Is the grass long?

Once you consider your own situation, then you can start evaluating your choice with regards to these parameters:

- Cut

- Cleat Types

- Uppers

At Cleats-Info, we delve a bit deeper into the materials that make up the various components of the shoes, from to heel from laces to midsole.... But the three parameters listed are a good place to start for the 'uninitiated'.

Cut

Under "cut" for best football cleats we mean 'high','low' or 'mid' cut uppers.

If you are either an offensive or defensive lineman, you probably ought to go with the extra ankle support you get from a high-top. Besides usually being the heaviest guys on the field, the offensive linemen in particular do a lot of "left to right to left" or lateral movement during a game.

The laced up high top can help reduce injury by helping to absorb some of the pressure associated with such movements.
On the other extreme, low cut shoes may be the best football cleats for some receivers and defensive backs since these guys are all about speed, and the lower the cut, the lighter the cleat.

Low cuts are particularly worthy of consideration by receivers, since they know where they are going! Meaning some defensive backs may want to opt for a little more support from a mid cut, at the expense of a little weight, in order to make the unexpected cuts they have to make to stay with their coverage.

We have read some analysts say the low cuts may actually help defensive backs make sharper cuts, we don't agree. Some support can be helpful, because as we have already alluded to, the defensive back seldom knows where the play is going.

We definitely recommend mid cut cleats (as best football cleats)for running backs, quarter backs and line-backers. These positions can't afford either the extreme weight of the highs, nor the lack of support of the light-weight lows, given the rather 'all round' need for agility and speed here.

Cleat Type

By type of cleat we mean "molded versus detachable cleats". If your playing conditions turf-wise will vary widely, you may want to opt for detachables so you can vary the cleat length according to the playing environment. If you do, make sure, in away games to show up plenty early on game day so you have time to select the appropriate cleats!

We recommend detachables for their versatility. You can get them in 1/2-, 5/8-, 3/4- and 1-inch sizes. You can use the full inchers on a a wet day in long grass or 1/2s when you are playing on a baseball/ football field, and have to deal with part of the game on the diamond, for example.

However, if you will be playing on mostly "generic" fields, ie normal, well kept grass and in usually good weather, the cost savings associated with molded cleats may be worth it for you.

Uppers

By 'uppers' we mean really, what are the uppers made of? Leather? Synthetic-leather?Mesh? Or a combo?

If you can afford it, leather is probably your best bet. At a (usually) slight cost of added weight, leather generally afords a heck of a lot more breathability and durability.

They may cost more, but they last longer too!

Leather also generally requires a much shorter break in period and are far superior in comfort and foot action control.

If you get leather cleats, make sure you get a good can of Scotchgard too! It will add to your shoes life-span!

However, if you are all about speed, there are some synthetic models out there that may be for you. We especially like some of the synthetic/mesh hybrids we have come across which combine low weights with some breathability.

But with cleats as with automobiles, "speed kills". If you go the synthetic route, be ready to go through at least two pair in a season!
